Registering Antique Automobiles

Antique automobiles are designated a special class of property under Article V Sec. 64 of the North Carolina General Statutes. For the purpose of this section, the term "antique automobile" means a motor vehicle that meets all of the following criteria:

  • It is at least 25 years old.
  • It is not used for daily transportation.
  • It is maintained in or restored to a condition substantially similar to its original condition.

Procedure for Registering a Custom Car

To register a custom car in North Carolina, you will need to follow these steps:

  1. Obtain a vehicle identification number (VIN) from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
  2. Complete the "Application for Certificate of Title and Registration" form (MV-1).
  3. Submit the completed form, along with the following documents, to the DMV:
    • Proof of ownership, such as a bill of sale or title
    • Proof of insurance
    • Payment of the registration fee
  4. The DMV will issue you a temporary registration card and license plate. You will need to display these until you receive your permanent registration and license plate in the mail.
